We had homemade tortillas with lunch today!
Wednesday at playgroup we moms were talking about food, and one of the other moms gave me her tortilla recipe. I tried it out for lunch today. I burnt the first one, but the second was good enough that I made another pair. The boys agree that they are good.
Learning all the time!!!
Maybe next time I'll let them help. :-)
Yum!!!
ReplyDeleteHow about posting the recipe???
My 7th grader is getting into cooking now. Mostly, I think, because the house rule is whoever cooks doesn't have to do the dishes (normally his chore). ;-)
This is directly from the person who game me the recipe.
ReplyDeleteFor every 2 tortillas, use:
1/2 cup flour
1/8 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp oil or fat
1/8 cup water
Mix flour, salt and oil. Add water. Add more water or flour until dough is soft and easy to work with. Knead for a couple of minutes, just until smooth. Divide into balls. Roll out or press. If using a press, let the dough rest in the press a minute or so before you cook it. Cook in a skillet over med. high heat (I use "6" on a 1-8 scale), 30 seconds on each side.
For the oil, I use canola. Olive oil is also good and adds an interesting flavor. Traditionally, lard is used, and does make for a tasty, if not too healthy tortilla. Butter can also be used to give a rich flavor.
You can also add a bit of baking powder to make it a little fluffy. I recently found out that this is a traditional tex-mex tortilla. The flat kind is a Sonoran tortilla.
